I just returned from a lovely weekend getaway to the North Fork region of Long Island. Unlike the famous trendy “Hamptons” to the south; the North Fork features a laid back charm that is more New England in atmosphere yet ever so famous and increasingly so for its Wine and award winning Wineries. If you are going to visit and stay overnight which I highly recommend there are few options of charm and quality: The Harvest Inn is however quite exceptional. Slightly hidden behind trees and greenery; one must look carefully at the signs just beyond the Raphael Vineyards. The Townsman do not approve of any large signage; therefore a discreet mailbox sign is featured.
The Inn is right across the street from Pindar vineyards therefore affording a lovely view of rows of vines from across the lawn and trees. This is part of the North Fork Wine Trail featuring more than 22 Wineries; The Inn has a special relationship with several however guests are offered a complimentary tasting for two at the nearby award winning Lenz Winery. The Inn features just five very comfortable rooms; little touches are throughout; comfy pillows, chairs, a self service closet containing a Fridge with cold water, Teas and Coffees for help yourself!! The Wrap Around porch has several wonderful rocking chairs and wicker cushioned furniture; magazines, ceiling fans, flower gardens and lovely goldfish pond with a babbling pool adds to the relaxed atmosphere. Christopher and Darolyn are wonderful hosts and very informative: They wish to make you feel at home here and are always on hand for any assistance.
The very comfortable rooms feature full private baths with shower and tub; wonderful Italian Poggesi amenities are featured in the Bath. Reading material, nightlights, rockers, desk diaries are all there for your comfort and enjoyment.
Christopher prepares a wonderful cooked breakfast each morning at 9AM. But prior to beginning at 730AM their famous McNulty’s blend is brewed and left in the dinning room for the early risers. McNulty’s by the way is one of the last old coffee and tea companies from vintage New York and is still located in it’s original store on Christopher Street in the heart of The West Village. This morning Christopher prepared a lovely recipe he discovered from his last Italian Holiday: Poached ripe peaches with warm balsamic glaze followed by coddled eggs Italian Style.
Christopher and Darolyn are happy to suggest and recommend several fine restaurants and wonderful food and produce shops in the area. They are both quite knowledge and very eager to please. The Inn is open year round and is also connected to various foot trails and paths; not to mention the wineries and even a private beach nearby!!
Please visit this lovely hamlet of North Fork; explore the ever increasing wines and wineries; the lovely charming villages, great produce, food, restaurants, fish and seafood and don’t forget to stay at the very charming Harvest Inn in Peconic.
